Personality: "What's the story here, am I the only one on this team who knows how to talk?" "I don't think talking is your problem." YORK & TEX, SEASON 9 EPISODE 10 York on first impression seems like a laid back sort of guy with a sharp wit that's probably a little too clever for his own good, with how much he tends to run his mouth. He tends towards unnecessary running commentary and off-hand jokes, and while he does have a sharp wit he isn't above using a cheesy line here and there. Within good taste, of course, a man like himself would never stoop as low as knock-knock jokes. Even in the heat of battle with a gun to his head York might still be joking around, and that's part of his uncanny ability to just stay incredibly relaxed and laid-back even in high-stress situations. York just doesn't see much of a point in letting himself get worked up, and if anything does bother him it's usually not noticeably or for very long. There are some things that get on his nerves, of course. He isn't exactly arrogant, at least he doesn't like to think so, just -- suitably confident in his skills, and he'll be indignant and quick to defend himself if his abilities are questioned. York is a careful sort of guy, a planner, and some of his more stubborn teammates insisting on charging in blindly into an encounter without any kind of a plan tends to annoy him. Still, even when he is genuinely irritated York's usually content enough to make a few dry comments and push it aside for the sake of keeping the peace and focusing on the mission, and never lets himself get worked up to the point of being any kind of angry. York tends towards caution and has a preference for planning ahead, but he's pretty damn resourceful and adaptable, capable of thinking and working on the fly. He's sharp, intelligent, and very, very curious, something that lends well to his specialization in Freelancer as an infiltration specialist. York acted as their locksmith, codebreaker and hacker, and every time it's like getting a new, interesting puzzle for him to poke and prod at and eventually inevitably pull apart. He's observant, perceptive and the kind of guy who tends to know a lot more than he lets on -- he's smart enough to know that there are some cards that you always want to play close to your chest, wearing that same easy-going smile the whole time. The trouble is that, as perceptive as he is, as suspicious as he might've been about the circumstances surrounding Freelancer, maybe he held onto those cards a little too closely. He never really followed that curiosity enough to find out what was wrong, not until it was far too late, and that ends up having a pretty significant effect on his personality. York has a pretty strong moral compass, a deep sense of loyalty and a belief in fair play. He's always driven by wanting to do the right thing, and it's pretty unfortunate that doing the right thing tends to have backfired spectacularly. Enlisting in Freelancer to help humanity win the war turned out to mostly be a very morally questionable self-indulgent vanity quest on the Director's part, siding with Tex during a training accident cost him his eye, and doing his part against Freelancer for all the wrongs they've committed ended with someone very dear to him losing their life. He grapples with all that guilt constantly, and the idea that he could have done more, that he always knew something was off but never followed that curiosity enough to get at the heart of what wrong, the idea that maybe, just maybe, he could have saved his friends. Those wounds are still fresh -- the realization that he's allowed himself to be manipulated all this time, the knowledge of what Freelancer did to him and his friends, and most of all, Carolina's death. York on the surface is still the same calm, collected joker he's always been, but further down he's still grappling and wrestling with guilt and loss and maybe worst of all a sense of world-weary resignation. He's tried his damned best to do the right thing, but all that's resulted in is him ending up tired, grieving, and very, very bitter. He cares far too much and too deeply about his old friends to ever completely let go, and there's a part of him that does want to somehow right everything that happened. But mostly, after everything he's been through and everything he's done, well, he isn't sure he has it in him to keep pressing like that. At the very damn least, he clearly deserves a break from it all. Inventory: York will be coming in with his Freelancer issued armor, a variant of the MJOLNIR armors worn by the Spartans in Halo. He however, is not a Spartan, the armor doesn't quite have all the same capabilities. It offers some measure of increased strength and speed, as well as the obvious resilience that comes in being encased in titanium alloy, and alongside that boasts a HUD with basic military tactical functions ( motion tracking, bioscan, radio uplink etc. ), energy shielding, and a slot for AI storage. Freelancer armor also comes equipped with experimental technology enhancements, and York's is a self-healing unit. It's shown to be effective enough to save someone from critical condition, from wounds as severe as point black gunshots to the back, and can be deployed for use on others. It should be noted that the armor and the enhancement are both designed for use with a combat-assisting AI. Since York won't be coming in with Delta, his armor and enhancement would remain functional, but would be more limited in their capabilities. He'll also be bringing in his weapons, namely a combat knife, a M6G Magnum Sidearm, and an M45 Tactical Shotgun. All the military stuff aside, he'll also have on hand an old keepsake, a lighter from Club Errera. Abilities: COMBAT // As a trained and capable space marine super soldier, York is a highly capable fighter. On the Freelancer leaderboards, he consistently held a spot in the top three, and has demonstrated that he can hold his own decently well against those ranked above him. He's proficient at both hand-to-hand and armed combat, preferring use of firearms, specifically his shotgun and pistol, and with his armor he's capable of hurling objects several time his own weight at an opponent. INFILTRATION SPECIALIST // This was his role on the Freelancer team, ass-kicking aside, and he was called on for all kinds of locks, barriers and security systems, anything from padlocks to encryption to holographic locks. York acts as everything from a locksmith to a hacker depending on what's needed for the job, and he's equally skilled and capable across the board. More advanced systems might trip him up, especially without Delta at his side, but whether or not he sets off a couple of alarms on the way York has always been able to get the job done. STABILITY // York doesn't let much get to him. Even in the most stressful situations he tends to remain cool and collected, and this means he doesn't panic easily, if at all. He's usually the guy who tries to diffuse situations, who doesn't get riled up and is able to keep on the objective of the moment, and pull everyone else back into focus. Flaws: BLIND SIDE // York sustained pretty significant damage to his left eye in a training accident during Project Freelancer, and he's never recovered from it. He is completely blind in his damaged eye and the vision in his other eye is affected enough to experience occasional blurring -- he's mentioned that it sometimes hurts to read. While he's usually capable of taking this into account during combat, he usually relies on an AI partner to help him watch his blind spot, and still occasionally finds himself caught off guard. Especially without that AI present, his eye would cause him some significant problems. SURVIVOR'S GUILT // Project Freelancer severely messed him up, but what they did to him doesn't quite compare to what they did to his friends. He's managed to get away from it mostly scot-free compared to the rest of them, and he's constantly plagued by the idea of what more he could've done, if maybe he didn’t try as hard as he should have to protect them. York doesn't have the strictest of moral centers but he does have a sense of honor and does in general try to do the right thing, and even if he's aware that it isn't his fault, the wrongs that he's done under the Director's orders still weigh pretty heavily on his conscience. APATHY // Especially after everything he's been through, York may have taken his laid back tendencies a little too far, and these days it's less of being chill and more of being almost completely detached. It's a mix of several things, just being world-weary and tired of dealing with all the bullshit that the Project put him and his friends through, being tired of watching his friends being at each other's throats, and the loss of someone who meant a great deal to him. Especially with Carolina's death, York seems generally resigned and unmotivated, and though he hasn't quite entirely given up, he's come very, very close. GRUDGE HOLDING // Despite his laid back nature York has shown some propensity to be surprisingly bitter. On the surface he seems capable of letting go of things, at least enough to be more or less willing to continue working with someone who wronged him, but this is less out of genuine forgiveness and more a desire to just keep the peace. Deep down he does find it incredibly difficult to let go of grudges even from years and years in the past, and part of him might still be looking for a way to get some long overdue payback. SAMPLES Action Log Sample: [ York turns around, and there's a mirror. It wasn't there before, he's pretty damn sure, and the sight of it startles him, perfect, pristine, lying in the middle of the road right at his feet. Everything in this city has tended to be various flavors of fucked up, and maybe he should've known better than to reach for it -- but something about it called to him, like a voice in his head that wasn't quite there. Before he even realizes what he's really doing his fingers are already curving around the ornate handle, the metal cool to the touch, lifting it until he can look into it, and. ] Carolina? [ It's her. Smiling back at him, red hair swept across her face, her eyes as bright and green as ever, her lips pulled into a familiar smile. York can barely breathe, his lungs twisting and tightening in his chest, knuckles white over the handle of the mirror -- the reflection's lips move, and he hears her voice, somehow, crystal clear, telling him how everything's fine. Everything's fine, and she'd managed to survive, she'd made it, did you really think I'd let a fall like that kill me, really, and then there's her laugh, clear and lovely and everything he remembers. There's more, too, faces in the background, old friends, talking and laughing with each other like nothing's ever happened, and -- -- His heart is racing when he manages to tear his eyes away from the mirror, blood rushing in his ears. He feels almost dizzy, like his knees could buckle, breathless like he's run a goddamn marathon. It takes too much effort to force himself to lower his arm, and he wants to look at it again, wants to see her, but. ] Damn. [ A laugh, a little shaky, and he manages a smile, tipping his head up and squinting up above the city, where he imagines these gods are supposed to be. ] You guys really are pretty messed up. |
